News Both Old and New

Lebanon NO KINGS rally

It’s official! The No Kings protests were the biggest yet, with over 8 MILLION Americans out in the streets across the country—including in every single Congressional district in the nation! The protests got real news coverage, too—finally! The Guardian has a great photo gallery.

There were over 500 of us at Academy Square in Lebanon!!  You can see some of the photos on the East Linn Indivisible Facebook page.  This is a closed group, so only those registered folks can see what’s posted there.  Please ask to join and answer the questions if you haven’t done so already (you won’t gain admittance if you don’t answer the questions).  Ruth (on the Steering Committee) does an incredible job of keeping us informed by posting the latest news items.  You can also go to the Events tab to learn of upcoming events that you might be interested in.

Government Surveillance

Next week, a little-known law that allows the government to sidestep the Constitution and spy on US citizens is set to expire.

Congress should let it die — but we fear some Democrats could join most Republicans in reauthorizing this civil liberties disaster at a time the regime is greedily gobbling up mass surveillance data to punish its enemies and round up immigrants. And we know Stephen Miller is eager to use the creepiest of AI tools to massively expand the government’s ability to spy on us.

The details get a bit wonky, but they really matter: Section 702 of the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) was designed, in 2008, to facilitate warrantless electronic surveillance of non-US citizens in other countries; in the meantime, though, courts have ruled that information gleaned “incidentally” about citizens’ communications can also be searched, no warrant necessary. Despite being a clear civil liberties disaster, Congress has routinely reauthorized Section 702 with bipartisan support.

In practice, this has meant that what was intended as a foreign intelligence tool and counterterrorism measure has been aggressively repurposed into a program for spying on American citizens — and a loophole lets the government get access to data which, even under FISA, requires a warrant. All they have to do is pay for it.

FISA’s Section 702 threatens our foundational liberties. Congress needs to let it die.

This movement is already flexing its power in the streets and in the voting booth. Now, we need to harness our collective power as workers and consumers to demand an end to the oligarch-enabled Trump regime. Indivisible is pouring resources into trainings, volunteer recruitment, and promotion to make May Day as big and successful as possible.

The same energy that went into planning the national No Kings lll events is being spent planning for May Day!

Cruelty against immigrants has been a cornerstone of Trump’s authoritarian agenda. Over the past year, we’ve seen this cruelty up close as the regime’s secret police raids our neighborhoods, separates families, and rips apart communities. But behind the scenes, the Department of Homeland Security has also been quietly working to scale up their ability to detain and disappear people in massive numbers.

DHS is actively scouting, purchasing, and planning to convert 23 warehouses nationwide into new detention and processing facilities. This would massively expand their detention capacity, make it even more difficult to expose the inhumane conditions immigrants face in ICE custody, and increase the likelihood for abuse and death.

Indivisible needs to band together now to oppose the warehousing of humans in the US. The good news is, we’re already seeing early wins in this fight.

Local activists have helped prevent the construction or conversion of 12 new detention centers across the country. This includes warehouses in rural areas and deep red states, where we’ve even seen some Republican Members of Congress publicly oppose DHS’s planned warehouse conversions.

We’re launching a new campaign to build and expand on these early wins. We’ll be sharing new tools and resources to organize against proposed warehouses in your community, providing dedicated staff support, and connecting local groups with partner organizations engaged in this fight.

To kick things off, we’re joining a national day of action on April 25 to oppose Trump’s mass detention agenda. If you’re ready to join the fight, register for our first training call on Tuesday, April 14 at 8pm ET.

Weekly Good News from Jess Craven at Chop Wood, Carry Water

You can sign up for her free daily emails and every Sunday she sends out the Good News from the previous week to remind us that even in the midst of all this chaos, good things are still happening.

  • This is a great piece by the great Rebecca Solnit about why the latest No Kings protests were different—in a better way—than those that came before.  (this is a long read, but definitely worth the time!)
  • A federal judge blocked Trump’s order to end funding for NPR and PBS. Huge!
  • A federal judge ruled that ICE and CBP must comply with Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for records related to immigration investigations and operations, a First Amendment victory that will allow journalists and researchers to better analyze federal immigration enforcement activities.
  • A federal judge ruled that the Trump administration must restore the legal status of potentially hundreds of thousands of immigrants who came to the United States legally through a Biden-era pathway.
  • Right-leaning podcaster bros Joe Rogan and Theo Von both criticized Trump for going to war with Iran this week.
  • A federal judge is allowing a civil suit brought against Trump for his actions on Jan. 6, 2021, to proceed in court.

Hands off Our Voting Rights

The so-called SAVE Act has moved on to the Senate, where we expect that it will fail to get the needed 60 votes. If it were to pass, it would eviscerate voting rights and disenfranchise millions – particularly women. You can find out more about it here.

It’s still important to call your senators and tell them to vote no and block it, using the filibuster. No senate Dems should be voting for this bill, which is designed to help hand the next election to Trump.

Senator Wyden – 202-224-5244;

Senator Merkley – 202-224-3753;

Chuck Schumer – 202-224-6542.
