News Both Old and New
Hands off Our Voting Rights
The so-called SAVE Act has moved on to the Senate, where we expect that it will fail to get the needed 60 votes. If it were to pass, it would eviscerate voting rights and disenfranchise millions – particularly women. You can find out more about it here.
It’s still important to call your senators and tell them to vote no and block it, using the filibuster. No senate Dems should be voting for this bill, which is designed to help hand the next election to Trump.
Senator Wyden – 202-224-5244;
Senator Merkley – 202-224-3753;
Chuck Schumer – 202-224-6542.
Good News from Jess Craven
– Chop Wood, Carry Water:
- The Supreme Court dealt a major blow to Trump’s economic policy, ruling that he had exceeded his authority when he imposed tariffs on nearly every U.S. trading partner.
- A federal judge issued a scathing ruling accusing the Trump administration of ‘terror’ against immigrants.
- A New York appellate court allowed a redraw of the state’s congressional map to move forward.
- A federal judge ordered the Trump administration to restore a slavery exhibit it had removed at George Washington’s former home in Philadelphia.
- Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has come out strongly against ICE, announcing a ban on agents using city property to conduct operations and ordering the police department to investigate their activities.
- Approval of Trump’s immigration policies fell to the lowest level since his return to the White House — 37% — amid signs he is losing support among American men on the issue.
A Big Win In Arkansas and Texas
Voters just delivered a big win for Democrats in Arkansas, where Derek Holladay flipped a key special election seat — another sign of growing momentum as communities head toward the next round of elections.
Democrat Taylor Rehmet, a machinist and union leader, defeated Republican Leigh Wambsganss for a Texas state Senate seat —and he didn’t just win. He won by a stunning 14 points. This was a district Trump won by 17 points in 2024. This stunning victory in a deep-red Texas county is sending shockwaves through the political system.
Funding for the Department of Homeland Security ran out at 12:01am Saturday morning, triggering a partial government shutdown. We are in a shutdown for one reason: Republicans had a choice between supporting massively popular, desperately needed restrictions on ICE and Border Patrol or shutting down DHS. And they chose to shut down DHS.
But a DHS shutdown in the current moment comes with real costs. DHS oversees FEMA, TSA, and the Coast Guard. A prolonged shutdown could impact disaster relief, air travel, and many other facets of American life — not to mention the paychecks of a large number of government workers. A prolonged shutdown is very possible. Dems have introduced legislation to fund all of DHS except for ICE and Border Patrol while negotiations on reforms continue, but at the moment Republicans think the chaos of the shutdown gives them more leverage. It’s up to us to change that.
We need to Contact our Members of Congress and encourage our family, friends, and neighbors to do the same. We need to drive hundreds of thousands more calls to Congress to make sure Democrats keep up the fight and Republicans agree to a bill that protects our communities and civil rights. Senator Wyden’s # – 202-224-5244; Senator Merkley’s # – 202-224-3753; Chuck Schumer’s # – 202-224-6542. If you have the 5Calls app, it will give you a script to say – or you can just tell them to keep this shutdown going until ICE is reined in.

So read this list, savor it, and then please share it. Let people know that these wins aren’t happening in a vacuum—they’re happening because people like YOU keep showing up and doing the work. (This is just a short list of the many good things that happened this week – we need to realize that we are winning some of the battles and keep up the fight!)
- A D.C. grand jury declined to indict six Democratic lawmakers involved in the ‘illegal orders’ video.
- Olympians representing Team USA have used their platforms to speak out against the Trump administration’s violent immigration raids in Minnesota and across the country.
- Todd Lyons, the acting chief of ICE, admitted to senators that federal immigration officers would have “no reason” to be at voting locations this November.
- The factory worker who heckled Trump last month, Thomas “TJ” Sabula, did not get fired for calling Trump a “pedophile protector.” UAW says the 40-year-old is back working and does not have a negative mark on his personnel file.
- House Democrats successfully forced a vote to stop Donald Trump’s erratic trade war with Canada that has raised costs for working families and small businesses. The vote succeeded, with several Republicans crossing the aisles to vote with them.
